Advanced Scanning

At Innisfail Optical we are continually investing in the latest technology to ensure that we can give the best possible care for our patients.  We have both an Ultra Wide Retinal Imaging Camera (OPTOS) and Optical Coherence Tomographer (OCT).  These scans can not only help diagnose or manage problems in store, they can also be sent to an Ophthalmologist for a second opinion.  If further treatment is required by the specialist, the results and a referral will be sent to the treating Ophthalmologist prior to your appointment.

Optical Coherence Tomography, “OCT” for short, is a non-invasive technology used for imaging the retina, the multi-layered sensory tissue lining the back of the eye.  It is more than a digital photo of the retina allowing us to see beyond the initial surface of the back of your eye.strat2

OCT is the first instrument to allow Optometrists to see cross-sectional images of the retina, it is revolutionising the early detection and treatment of eye conditions such as macular holes, pre-retinal membranes, macular swelling and even optic nerve damage.

We recommend you consider an OCT if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Trouble reading or any other activity that requires fine vision.
  • Straight lines seem wavy or bent.
  • People’s faces are harder to see.
  • Dark or empty patches appear in the centre of your vision.

If you are over 45 you may choose to have a regular OCT which enables us to monitor any changes in your eye over time. Please discuss this option with our staff or Optometrist when you make your appointment.

optos 4Ultra Wide Retinal Imagining or OPTOS is a revolutionary new tool in the detection and diagnoses of eye health issues.  More commonly found in Ophthalmology practices, The OPTOS is able show more of the retina than ever before.  Where a fundus camera generally displays 15% of the retina, the latest OPTOS machines can show 88%, this enlarged view gives Optometrists the chance to diagnose problems that would have normally been outside their field of view.  Additionally the retina is the only place in the body where blood vessels can be seen directly, this gives the operator the chance to see other signs of diseases such as stroke, heart disease and diabetes.

This advanced tool enables Optometrists to not only find, but track eye health issues such as Retinal anomalies, Diabetic Retinopathy and Retinal tears.

We will recommend an OPTOS scan if:

  • The patient has diabetes, this should be done every year at their yearly check up.
  • A patient notices flashes and floaters or any other visual anomalies
  • in the management of eye disease

(The costs for an OPTOS or OCT is not yet covered under Medicare. An OPTOS or OCT assessment will attract a fee).
